OPEN CALL – bastard nordic

SITE & bastard are looking for freelance writers in both Sweden and Norway to take part in our newly started project bastard nordic.

bastard nordic wishes to strengthen the infrastructure for freelance writers interested in writing about contemporary dance and performance throughout Scandinavia. By establishing editorial offices in Stockholm and Oslo we want to support the field and offer a platform for writers to have their texts published and reach a Nordic audience. The goal is to publish a wide range of articles, interviews, critique, thematic analysis, podcasts and other formats during the project.

The project runs until September 2025 and will provide space for writers based in Sweden, Norway and Denmark to cover events in the Nordic region and get their texts published on bastard.blog.

Participants will be offered to travel to SITE/Specific Festival in Stockholm in June 2024 and Det Frie Felts Festival in Copenhagen in January 2025. During the project participants can also be paired together with dance and performance artists working in longer residencies to write from having a continuous dialogue about their practice.

The project aims to:

– Strengthen the infrastructure for writers writing about dance and performance critique in the Nordic countries.

– Offer paid positions for writers.

– Provide exchange between writers in the Nordic countries.

– Increase the visibility of dance and performance in media and provide documentation of artistic development in the field.

We offer the selected participants:

– 1-3 articles/texts published on bastard.blog, written in connection to SITE/Specific Festival June 13-15 2024 in Stockholm and Det Frie Felts Festival in Copenhagen January 14-18 2025. Each published article is compensated by a 500€ fee.

– Costs for travel, accommodation and per diems when traveling to SITE/Specific Festival in June 2024 and Det Frie Felts Festival in January 2025.

– Access to a shared workspace at SITE office, located in Farsta south of Stockholm from March 2024 – September 2025 and access to a meeting room once a month at Danseinformasjonen in Oslo.

– Participation in writing/critique workshops during the project.

You are expected to:

– Be available to travel to Stockholm to attend SITE/Specific Festival in Farsta June 13-15 2024 and/or Det Frie Felts Festival in Copenhagen January 14-18 2025. We expect you to travel in a sustainable way, by train whenever possible.

– Take part in 4-5 digital meetings, each max 2 hours long, between March 2024 – March 2025 together with other participants of the programme. You will be compensated 50€ for each meeting you attend.

Application guidelines:

The applicant should have documented professional experience in writing about dance and performance. Formal education is not required. We encourage writers of all ages and backgrounds from across all cultural fields to apply.

The application should include:

– Your CV together with a short bio, maximum 2 A4 in total.

– A motivational letter of maximum 1 A4. Describe why you are applying and your expectations of taking part in the project. Please also state if you have any certain topics you want to write about.

– 1-2 work samples of published texts.

Selection process:

Selected participants will be interviewed by representatives from SITE and bastard, in mid/end of February. Participation will be agreed on individually regarding time periods and travels. Final participants will be notified by the end of February 2024.

bastard is an independent platform and forum for the experimental performing arts performance art, choreography and cross-disciplinary art practices. bastard is experimenting with text formats as a public laboratory and tries to develop and give space to a language for these art practices that challenge art forms. In addition, bastard publishes performance texts.
